ALEXANDER STUBB – NEW PRESIDENT OF FINLAND

ALEXANDER STUBB - NEW PRESIDENT OF FINLAND

Center-right Alexander Stubb from the National Coalition party won the presidential election in Finland. In the second round, more than 51% of voters voted for him. His rival Pekka Haavisto, a member of the left-wing Green Union party, received 48% of the vote. He has already admitted defeat.

Alexander Stubb called the victory his “greatest honor.”

The first round of elections took place on January 28. Stubb received more than 27% of the vote, and Haavisto received almost 26%. But to win, you need to secure the support of more than 50% of voters, so a second round was needed.

The inauguration will take place on March 1. Stubb will replace Sauli Niinistö, who served two consecutive six-year terms as president.

Unlike many European presidents, the head of state in Finland has greater powers. Alexander Stubb, together with the government, will develop the country’s security and foreign policy. He will also lead the Finnish armed forces and represent the country in NATO.

Stubb holds pro-European views and supports the country’s entry into NATO.
