ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN NORTH CYPRUS

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN NORTH CYPRUS

Scientists from the METU Northern Cyprus campus have developed a system that detects sea turtles that come to the island’s beaches and lays eggs using an artificial intelligence-powered UAV, and informs volunteers to protect them.

Yeshilada explained that they conducted interdisciplinary design studies at METU’s North Cyprus campus and added a project-based course to the curriculum where engineering students from different fields could work together.

In this context, Yeşilada stated that they are implementing a project on sea turtles that swim to the beaches during certain periods

TRNC to lay eggs: “Usually volunteers have to physically scan the beach to protect these turtles. As part of the project, we developed a machine learning-based system that automatically notifies when turtles come to the beach,” she said.
